How are you doing today? Welcome to the first episode of our monthly mental health newsletter, in these newsletters we would be talking about how to lead mentally/ emotionally healthy lives. In accordance to the mental health awareness month we would be talking about MENTAL HEALTH AND TOTAL WELLLNESS. We would start by defining mental health according to the World Health Organization standard, it is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community ‘WHO 2015’. Total Wellness on the other hand is the holistic well-being, which implies that one has to be physically, mentally and emotionally balanced.
How do we achieve total wellness in relation to mental health? According to WHO, there is no health without mental health; in this letter we would be highlighting how to improve one’s physical and emotional state for a healthy mental health.
Studies have shown that one’s mental health can be affected by his/her physical state, for example people with chronic mental conditions are at risk of experiencing chronic physical conditions and vice versa. One’s diet as well has a great influence on a person’s mental wellbeing. According to Felice Jacka a healthy diet is protective and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety.
Emotions and mental health can be related to a tag team where mental health refers to ability to process information and emotion refers to ability to express feelings which are based on the emotions processed.
Steps to follow
• Exercise; studies have shown that regular exercise has a link to mood elevation, reducing anxiety, depression and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function.• Eating a healthy diet; remember that a healthy diet is protective and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety. • Acknowledging your emotions ; knowing that it is okay to feel sad, angry or numb• Protecting your mental space ; focusing on positive thoughts • Allowing yourself to be vulnerable; speaking up when you don’t feel like yourself • Pay attention to how you speak to yourself • Take care of your body ; exercise , healthy eating, don’t abuse substances • When you are overwhelmed seek professional help.
